Find the Missing Element! Haptic Identification of Incomplete Pictures by Sighted and Visually Impaired Children

چکیده
This study investigates the haptic identification of incomplete raised-line drawings (i.e., pictures with a missing element) by sighted and early visually impaired children aged 9-10 years. Incomplete pictures have already been used in the visual modality to assess perceptual reasoning in children, but not yet under the haptic modality. We found that success at identifying incomplete raised-line pictures (correct naming of object plus missing feature) concerned 32.65% of children’s responses, suggesting that the task was hard although not entirely impossible. Overall, the visually impaired children outperformed the sighted controls at this task. However, there was a large variation in responses across items, and the superiority of the visually impaired children over their sighted peers was not systematic. We concluded that adapting materials from the Wechsler’ image completion subtest to the haptic modality may be relevant to investigate haptic perceptual reasoning in children with and without

Haptic identification of raised-line drawings when categorical information is given: A comparison between visually impaired and sighted children
Research into haptic picture perception has mostly concerned adult participants, and little is known about haptic picture perception in visually impaired and sighted children. In the present study, we compared 13 visually impaired children (early blind and low vision) aged 9-10 years and 13 agematched blindfolded sighted children on their ability to identify raised-line pictures of common objec...
متن کاملComparison of the traumatic dental injuries between visually impaired and their peer sighted children in Kerman, Iran
BACKGROUND AND AIM: Trauma is a common problem among blindness and visually impaired children. The purpose of the current study was the assessment of the prevalence of traumatic dental injuries and the enamel defects resulted from these injuries among 6-12 years old blind children in comparison to the sighted children in Kerman. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, sample size was considered...
متن کاملHaptic Pictures, Blindness, and Tactile Beliefs: Preliminary Analysis of a Case-Study
Research on the identification of raised-outline drawings (haptic pictures) indicates that blind and sighted individuals process pictorial information similarly. To explain this similarity, the partial overlap hypothesis argues that pictorial representation is constrained by principles grounded on objective shape perception that are shared by vision and haptics. In contrast, the tactile beliefs...
متن کاملAn Investigation into Virtual Objects Learning By using Haptic Interface for Visually Impaired Children
It is well known that visually impaired children have limited opportunities in learning new things compared to normal sighted children as visually impaired children do not have one of the important senses of human being. Computer simulated virtual reality environment can provide better opportunities for visually impaired children especially in learning the shapes of new objects. An application ...
متن کاملTangible pictures: viewpoint effects and linear perspective in visually impaired people.
Perception of raised-line pictures in blindfolded-sighted, congenitally blind, late-blind, and low-vision subjects was studied in a series of experiments. The major aim of the study was to examine the value of perspective drawings for haptic pictures and visually impaired individuals. In experiment 1, subjects felt two wooden boards joined at 45 degrees, 90 degrees, or 135 degrees, and were ins...
